Palliative care at the heart of THRF Group
Palliative care has been an important focus area for The Hospital Research Foundation (THRF) Group, focusing on providing quality palliative care support and research for all South Australians, regardless of where they live.
The successful merger of Laurel Palliative Care Foundation (LPCF) with THRF Group in 2020, was designed to maximise impact and garner statewide philanthropic support for this essential area of healthcare, for all South Australians. For 30 years LPCF has provided vital end-of-life support through research and education to Southern Adelaide and Laurel Hospice, part of Southern Adelaide Palliative Services.
The long-term vision was to ultimately expand this outstanding care and support right across South Australia. To realise this vision and ensure South Australia remains at the forefront, THRF Group will focus on funding and supporting palliative care on a statewide, collaborative basis which will be reflected in a new charity extension called The Hospital Research Foundation Group – Palliative Care.
This exciting change coincides with enhanced support and services available to patients and their families, impacted by palliative care across South Australia as part of a newly developed state-wide model of funding and guidelines. Education around palliative care will continue to be a priority, as will opportunities for supporters to request and participate in the palliative care conversation and issues.
To reinforce South Australia’s reputation as a leader in this area of research, THRF Group has also committed $450,000 per year for five years ($2.25million) to establish an innovative and transformational palliative care research program to be rolled out in late 2021.
The legacy of the organisation will always be honoured and Southern Adelaide supported but also enhanced to ensure it succeeds well into the future. THRF Group remains committed to supporting world-class care and research for all South Australians. It is a small change that will generate significant benefits to patients, families and the wider community.
